Looking for American Literature?

I am doing a project that is a powerpoint that has to relate a peice of American literature (novel, novella, biography or long poem) to an American time period or American event in history. I cannot use what I have read in cl (great gatsby, gs of wrath, scarlet letter, red badge of courage) and I have no clue what literature to use. A story about D-Day, the great depression, or something could be cool. Please, suggestions.
