PLEASE HELP!! Why did he ignore my text but call me?

So i REALLY like this guy but we have a love/hate relationship like were mean to eachother all the tim but we dont sincerely mean it. 2 days ago we were texing and he said he didnt hate me but he thought i was annoying, so after 4 hours of nonstop texting each other he ignored my last text which ended the convo. And it told myself that id wait for him to text me first. But heres the catch, he has NEVER texted me first and all of his friends say they even have to text him first too. Then the next day at 9 p.m. he called me but i missed it so at 9:10 i called back and he didnt answer. Then i texted him and said "You called" and at 12 a.mYou called me at 9 tard.." and he never responded, should i have not of texted him or called him? Was this his way of contacting me?
